Job Description

The Temporary Animal Caretaker role with Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in Basseterre, St. Kitts works in the Pasture Department under the supervision of the Manager of Animal Care. The position supports daily livestock care and campus animal operations, with significant outdoor work in changing weather conditions. Responsibilities include following pasture schedules and animal care protocols, communicating with supervisors and colleagues, observing animals for illness or injury, counting livestock, helping keep animals in appropriate paddocks, and assisting with animal emergencies. The role may also involve examining, treating, medicating, collecting, restraining, and transporting animals when properly trained and directed. Additional duties include helping students handle and restrain livestock, transporting livestock to campus, applying identification systems to incoming animals, driving pasture vehicles when licensed and insurable, assisting with brush control, maintaining fresh water and feed supplies, cutting and delivering forage grass, cleaning animal areas, keeping barns, stalls, pens, paddocks, fences, and gates in good condition, assisting with electric fence maintenance, supporting pest control, helping with forage grass culture and irrigation, and being available for fire emergencies and hurricane crises. Required qualifications include the ability to lift 50 to 70 pounds, work outdoors in sun or rain, stand for long periods, work directly with large and small animals, work weekends and public holidays, and hold a St. Kitts driver’s license.
