Job Description
The Environmental Health and Safety Manager at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in Basseterre, St. Kitts helps strengthen the campus safety culture and reduce occupational risk. This full-time role supports the research function and the Occupational Health and Safety program while applying knowledge of local and U.S. federal EHS rules, along with standards and requirements such as OSHA, ASHRAE, and ANSI. The position involves assessing work environments, identifying hazards, and helping design programs that reduce or prevent disease, injury, and environmental harm from chemical, physical, radiological, biological, ergonomic, and other factors. It may also include risk analysis, environmental program management, fire safety, emergency preparedness, inspections, compliance monitoring, trend review, corrective action recommendations, and documentation of standards compliance. The role coordinates the OHS program with department heads and Health Services, supports registration, compliance checks, risk assessments, and mitigation measures, and helps onboard new colleagues. It also trains employees, updates internal health and safety policies and procedures, reviews incident and accident records, advises managers and supervisors, evaluates academic and research documents for environmental risks, and participates in inspections of animal care and use areas with IACUC members and Department Heads. This position is designated as a Campus Safety Authority. Applicants should have a four-year degree in a related field, a closely related science background, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. At least five years of Environmental Health and Safety officer experience is required, preferably in an educational institution. The successful candidate should have strong negotiation, communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills, and IOSH membership is preferred.
