Loss Prevention Officer

Job Description

The Loss Prevention Officer is stationed at the store exit to protect company assets, deter theft, and support store profitability while providing courteous, respectful customer service. Responsibilities include verifying merchandise against receipts, monitoring high-risk goods, checking carts and baskets for concealed or unpaid items, and addressing attempted theft using non-confrontational techniques. The officer also monitors front-end activity for possible internal theft, including unauthorized discounts. Other duties include checking exit alarms and barriers, identifying safety hazards, and keeping exit routes clear for customers and emergency access. The officer records and reports incidents, suspicious activity, and safety concerns in real time, and serves as the primary contact for security personnel and law enforcement during incidents requiring intervention or investigation. The position requires extended standing, often six to eight hours per shift, and the ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally. A secondary school diploma or equivalent and one to three years of retail experience are preferred. Applicants must demonstrate reliability, punctuality, strong customer service, written and verbal communication, and problem-solving skills. They should be able to build rapport quickly with diverse customers and remain calm, helpful, and professional under pressure. A basic understanding of Home & Building Depot departmental procedures is needed to provide accurate directions.
